Male:
Dark brownish black to black head, neck and entire upperparts and underparts, strongly glossed with green and purple iridescence. Tufts of feathers on head produce domed crown and hanging crest on nape. Bare swollen skin around eye and joining base of bill blackish, sometimes with reddish tinge. Primary feathers black , and secondaries glossed green, forming speculum behind white forewing( white shows on closed wing of resting bird); underwing-converts white, flight feathers black. Bill black on nail, across middle upper mandible and at base, where enlarged blackish knob extends along top of upper mandible to level with nostrils; rest of bill pale flesh pink. Legs and feet dark grey.Female:
Identical to male but substantially smaller, with no overlap in measurements or weights. Lacks lobe and bare area around eyes.Juvenile:
Identical to adults but lacking gloss to feathers and thus looking duller and browner, some appearing dark brown, mottled paler brown. White on wing-converts acquired first year, but continues to increase in extend during first year, but continues to increase in extent during second year and perhaps subsequently.

- Breeding:
- Het vrouwtje Muscovy duck legt doorgaans zo'n 7-11 white eieren het broeden duurt 35 dagen.
- Kunstmatig broeden:
De ideale relatieve luchtvochtigheid voor het uitbroeden van de meeste watervogeleieren is 55% voor grondbroeders en 40% bij holenbroeders. De temperatuur is meestal 37,4° C. Stel ventilatie in zoals aanbevolen door de fabrikant van de broedmachine. Eieren moeten minimaal 4 keer per dag automatisch of met de hand worden gedraaid. Naarmate de vrucht zich ontwikkelt, verliest het ei water en wordt de luchtzak groter. Bij normale ontwikkeling van een ei met een incubatietijd van 35 dagen neemt de luchtzak ongeveer een derde van het ei in beslag, dit bij drie dagen voor uitkomst. Reinheid is van vitaal belang en idealiter moet de luchtvochtigheid worden verhoogd tot 65% nadat de eerste tekenen van uitkomst zichtbaar worden.
- Ringdagen:
- Aanbevolen passende ringmaat voor de Muscovy duck is 14 mm.De gesloten pootring kan alleen aangebracht worden bij een jonge large duck van ongeveer 14 dagen oud.
